Privacy Policy
Wayther helps you plan travel using long-term climate patterns. It is not a forecast service. We do not require an account, login, or password. This policy explains what limited data we collect, how we use it, and your choices.
Quick summary
- No account required. Wayther has no sign-up, login, or password.
- Limited analytics. We use privacy-conscious aggregate measurement to improve the site.
- No sale of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising.
- Climate planning, not forecasting. Wayther compares long-term climate patterns, not live weather.
Scope of this policy
This policy applies to information we process through the Services. It does not apply to third-party websites, products, or services that we do not own or control, including any sites you reach through links from the Services. Climate information shown in Wayther is drawn from public meteorological datasets and describes places and long-term weather patterns, not people, so it is not personal information about you.
Information we collect
We collect a limited amount of information, most of it automatically and in aggregate. The categories below describe what we may collect and where it comes from.
Information you provide to us
Wayther does not require you to create an account or submit personal details to use the Services. If you choose to contact us, for example by emailing us, we receive the information you include, such as your email address and the contents of your message. We use it to respond to you and to keep a record of the correspondence.
Information we collect automatically
- Usage data. Pages and destinations viewed, searches run, filters applied, and similar interaction events, collected through analytics in aggregate where analytics is enabled.
- Device and connection data. Browser type and version, operating system, device type, screen size, language settings, and referring or exit pages.
- Log and server data. Internet protocol (IP) address, request times, and other standard server logs generated when your browser interacts with our hosting and content delivery providers, used for security, reliability, and troubleshooting.
- Approximate location. A coarse, region-level estimate derived from your IP address, used only to choose an automatic light or dark theme. See the section on location and theme below.
- Cookies and similar technologies. Small identifiers and storage entries used for preferences and optional analytics, described in the next section.
Information from third parties
We receive limited information from the service providers that help us run the Services, such as aggregate analytics reports where analytics is enabled, hosting and security logs, static asset request data, and coarse region signals available from hosting or content-delivery request data. We do not buy personal information about you from data brokers.
Information we do not collect
- No accounts, passwords, or login credentials.
- No names, mailing addresses, or payment or financial details. Wayther does not take payments.
- No precise device geolocation, and no use of the browser geolocation permission.
- No special categories of sensitive personal data.
- No email address, unless you choose to send us one by contacting us.
How we use information
We use the information described above for the following purposes:
- To operate, maintain, and provide the Services, including returning climate planning results.
- To remember your temperature unit, theme, language, and most recent search criteria.
- To choose an automatic light or dark theme based on time of day at your approximate region.
- To understand which features are used so we can improve and develop the Services.
- To keep the Services secure, prevent abuse, and diagnose and fix technical problems.
- To respond to your inquiries and communicate with you about the Services.
- To comply with applicable laws and to enforce our terms.
We do not use this information to build advertising profiles, serve targeted advertising, or try to identify you personally.
Legal bases for processing (EEA and UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we process your personal data only when we have a legal basis to do so. Depending on the situation, the bases we rely on are:
- Legitimate interests. To run, secure, and improve the Services, including aggregate analytics, where those interests are not overridden by your rights.
- Consent. For non-essential analytics where analytics is enabled. If analytics is unavailable or disabled, non-essential analytics does not load. You can also clear site data to reset browser-stored preferences.
- Legal obligation. Where we must process data to comply with the law.
- Performance of a contract. Where processing is needed to provide a service you have requested.
Location and theme
To choose a light or dark theme automatically, Wayther first uses your device time zone, then may refine the day or night estimate using your approximate location derived from your IP address by a third-party IP geolocation service. This lookup is cached and runs at most once per day.
Wayther never prompts for your precise device location and does not use the browser geolocation permission. The region signal is used only to set the theme, not to identify or track you. You can override automatic theme at any time by selecting a theme yourself.
Browser storage
Some preferences live in your browser using local and session storage rather than on our servers. This typically includes your temperature unit, theme, language, your most recent search draft or criteria, and a short-lived flag noting that you recently viewed results so the home page can adapt. Search criteria may include the destination or region, month or date-style timing, trip style, and weather preferences you last entered, but it is stored locally in your browser and is not tied to an account.
You can clear this at any time by clearing site data for Wayther in your browser. Doing so resets your preferences but does not delete anything from a server profile, because there is no account.
Service providers
We rely on a small number of providers to run the Services. They process data only to provide their services to us, under contracts or terms that limit their use of the information to those purposes. These provider categories include:
- Application hosting and infrastructure providers for running the site, routing requests, and maintaining server logs.
- Content delivery and asset-storage providers for serving static climate, map, and image assets efficiently.
- Analytics providers for aggregate usage measurement where analytics is enabled.
- Map and geospatial providers for map tiles and geographic display features on map-based surfaces.
- Climate and public-data sources for weather and climate inputs; these sources describe places and long-term conditions, not site visitors.
International data transfers
Wayther and our service providers may process and store information in countries other than the one in which you live, including the United States. Those countries may have data protection laws that differ from the laws of your country. Where we transfer personal data internationally and the law requires it, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission Standard Contractual Clauses and equivalent UK transfer mechanisms, to protect the information.
Data retention
We keep information only for as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy, unless a longer period is required or permitted by law. Aggregate analytics data is retained for up to 14 months. Preferences stored in your browser remain until you clear them. Standard server request logs are typically retained for up to 30 days unless needed longer for security, fraud prevention, debugging, or legal reasons. Email correspondence is typically retained for up to 24 months unless needed longer to handle an ongoing request, resolve a dispute, or meet a legal obligation.
How we protect information
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information against unauthorized access, loss, misuse, and alteration, including encryption in transit (HTTPS) and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. Because Wayther does not use accounts or collect payment information, the personal information at risk is limited.
Your rights and choices
You have choices about your information regardless of where you live:
- Block or limit analytics and preference cookies through your browser settings.
- Clear site data to reset your saved unit, theme, language, and last search criteria.
- Leave automatic theme on time zone alone by blocking the region lookup, or set the theme yourself.
- Contact us with any question or request about your information.
EEA and UK rights
If you are in the EEA or the UK, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or restrict processing of your personal data, to object to certain processing, to data portability, and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. To exercise these rights, contact us using the details below. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.
US state privacy rights
Several US states provide privacy rights to their residents. Depending on where you live, and subject to applicable thresholds and exceptions, these may include the right to know or access categories or specific pieces of personal information collected, the right to correct inaccurate information, the right to delete personal information, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information or of targeted advertising.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising or targeted advertising, as those terms are defined under these laws. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. To make a request, or to ask a question about these rights, contact us using the details below. If we deny a request, you may have the right to appeal as provided by applicable law.
Children
Wayther is a general-audience travel planning tool and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13, or under the age defined as a child by the law that applies to you. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.
Third-party links
The Services may contain links to third-party websites, such as official travel advisory pages or external resources. We provide these links for convenience and do not control and are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of those sites. We encourage you to read the privacy policy of any site you visit.
Automated decisions and profiling
Wayther scores and ranks destinations based on climate criteria and any preferences you enter, to help you compare options. This ranking is informational and does not produce legal or similarly significant effects about you, and it does not involve solely automated decision-making about individuals within the meaning of applicable data protection law.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time as the product, our practices, or the law change. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page, and we will provide additional notice on the site for significant changes. The updated policy applies from the date it is posted, unless a later date is stated.
How to contact us
If you have questions, requests, or complaints about this policy or your information, you can reach us at privacy@wayther.net. This policy is governed by the data protection laws that apply in the jurisdictions where we operate the Services. If you are in the EEA or the UK, you also have the right to contact your local data protection supervisory authority.
